Along with many schools across the country on March 15th Confey College took part in celebrating Proclamation Day 2016/ Lá an Fhorógra 2016. During tutorial, students received a lapel badge from the Thomas Meagher Foundation. The motto on the badge is ‘Pride Respect Peace’. To set the tone for the day all students watched a short video clip on the Rising. Students and staff then gathered outside where different parts of the school yard had been given the names of key buildings and personnel involved in the Easter Rising 1916. These signs were kindly made by the woodwork department.

Mike O’Byrne greeted all present and read out his message for the school community. Amy O’Reilly, Gregg Long & Alfred Olayinka read out the Proclamation of 1916 and Confey College’s Proclamation for a New Generation. This Proclamation for a New Generation outlined the vision of the students for Ireland in the 21st Century and the values they want to see in our communities.

Music throughout the ceremony was provided by the music department & members of the school choir . They led the school in the singing of Amhrán na bhFiann after the Irish flag had been raised. Guests of honour on this special day were local senior citizens Tom Malone & Joe Dempsey. Tom & Joe shared their memories and stories passed down to them from their parents. Along with Kiva McGing & Alan O’Reilly from the student council Tom & Joe raised the flag. Thank you to Tom & Joe for attending our ceremony.

The History & English departments held poster and poetry competitions in the run up to Proclamation Day. The winners were announced and the winning entries were on display outside. All projects were displayed in B14 in the run up to Proclamation Day. Ms. Gráinne O’Connor delivered a very interesting talk on Seán Mac Diarmada to TY & 5th yr students.

A number of students dressed up in costumes creating an atmosphere of life in 1916. Many thanks to Kilcock Musical Dramatic Society and Kildare Co.Co (decade of commemorations) for providing us with the costumes and weapons.

Thanks to all staff who assisted with the organisation of the different activities especially Mr Devereux who went to great heights to capture the moment on camera. A huge thanks to the history department for coordinating the event.
